Quality Porch Time; Portland, Oregon; Yesterday I ventured out, at my friend Chelsea’s urging, to Halocene to see a bunch of musicians and drink whiskey sours. I stopped drinking the whiskey sours to pay attention to Nikaido Kazumi, who absolutely blew my mind. I did not get any photos of the mind-blowing action, but I did get a photo of the planning, before we knew what we were in for. How innocent we all were.
PHOTO FOR AUGUST 2, which was a Tuesday.
The Dog’s Name is Bailey; On an island in the Columbia (on the Columbia?) River, Portland, Oregon; Day One in Portland was perfect. My friend Rob, his mentor (a dog training extraordinaire), and I ventured out to the river with some dogs. This chocolate lab’s name is Bailey (of course it is). In the background on the right you can see a boat that has been overturned. Further in the background you can see Washington State.

That’s a Whale; Klamath River, Klamath, CA; This is a photo of the beautiful Klamath river. It is also a picture of a gray whale. This mama whale swam so far into the Klamath with her calf that she couldn’t get out. Her calf turned around and swam back to the ocean, but this 40-ton whale couldn’t remove herself from circling under the 101 bridge which is now continuously filled with tourists crossing and recrossing the road following her progress. Sheeplike, we parked, walked across the bridge, and stood sadly on the side of the road, watching a lost creature.

It’s a Tree House; Somewhere not as close to the Oregon border as we thought we were, California; On Sunday some friends and I embarked upon a journey up the 101 with visions of camping and redwoods and Portland dancing in our heads. We drove through a tree, ate vegan burgers, and slept in a ring of some of the tallest trees I’ve ever seen. This was one of our tourist stops. Above this bemused bear’s head, there is a sign that says “World Famous TREE HOUSE - Believe it or Not!”; I believed it. I’d never heard of it, but I believed it.
PHOTO FOR JULY 30, which was a Saturday.
World’s Largest Octopus [Kites]; Berkeley Kite Fest 2011, Cesar E. Chavez Park at Berkeley Marina, Berkeley, CA; On Saturday I ventured with a friend to the Berkeley Kite Fest where we ate massive sandwiches, witnessed synchronized stunt kite flying, and laid on the grass to ponder the zen of flight.

These Are Donuts; Work, Valencia St., San Francisco; Someone brought leftover donuts for the interns as an offering of extreme gratitude for the free work we provide. I don’t eat donuts. Instead, I ventured to Phoenix for a Ice Tea Lemonade Vodka with some fellow interns. It wasn’t free, but it certainly aided in making me feel appreciated.
